Give your team a number

How to pick the one number a fleet owns, and how to read its progress.

One number

A fleet is a team given a number to hit. Pick one that the team can move on its own within a month: qualified meetings booked, serious issues fixed within a day, invoices matched within a day. Revenue is too far away, and messages sent is too close.

The baseline

Write down where the number is today, before the team starts. Without it the first report means nothing. If nobody knows, the team’s first week is measuring it.

Reading progress

The team’s app shows the number at the top, with what moved it underneath. Read it weekly, not daily. A fleet that is behind on Tuesday is usually fine on Friday, and the supervisor already knows.

Changing the number

Change it when the team has held it for a month. Raise the target, or pick the next number along the chain. Do not add a second number: that is a second fleet.
